DESERT ISLAND ORCHESTRA
a collaboration of Upstream Music and the Dal Music Department
The name is derived from an early Upstream survivalist workshop concept where musicians are marooned on a Desert Island with diverse instruments and backgrounds and a challenge to play something beautiful together to get them off the island. It is in this spirit that Upstream partnered with Dalhousie Music students and faculty to merge ages and "who shows up" orchestration to make music together. The music utilizes conduction and is built around compositions by students Arthur Jackson Fairfax-Berry, Thomas Hoy and Upstream's Paul Cram.

MOTHER OF GIRL
mother of girl puts familiar melodic concepts into experimental sound landscapes. Local musicians Ryan Veltmeyer, Ann Denny and John Snow bring a wealth of experience from many Halifax and Toronto bands, including I See Rowboats, Paper Beat Scissors & Airfields. They trade around on voice, trombone, keyboard, drums and found instruments as they swerve in and out of catchy pop hooks, sweet folk ballads and parallel musical universes.

‘Far more radical than most of his generation’Graham Collier's career spans four decades of innovation at the forefront of British jazz. He was born in Tynemouth, England, in 1937 and on leaving school he joined the British Army as a musician. He was the first British graduate of the Berklee School of Jazz, Boston, where he studied with Herb Pomeroy. He was the first jazz composer to receive a commission from the Arts Council of Great Britain, and in 1987 he was awarded the Order of the British Empire (OBE) by Queen Elizabeth II.
His ensembles are known as Graham Collier Music and are dedicated to performing his own compositions. He has also recorded with the Australian contemporary music group The Collective, the Danish Radio Jazz Orchestra and the NDR Big Band, and for ensembles ranging from saxophone quartet to symphony orchestra. He has released 19 albums and CDs.
He is equally well-known as an author and educator, having written seven books on jazz, jazz history, compositional techniques and education. In the early 1980s, he developed the six-year jazz degree course at the Sibelius Institute in Helsinki, Finland, and in 1986 he launched the Royal Academy of Music’s jazz course where he remained as artistic director until 1999. He has travelled extensively to present seminars, lectures, workshops and concerts throughout Europe, North America, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the Far East. In 1989, he was among the group of international jazz educators who formed the International Association of Schools of Jazz and he was Secretary of the Daily Board for nine years, and co-editor of its magazine Jazz Changes.
In late 1999 he left England, and after eight years living in southern Spain, moved with his long-time partner, author John Gill, to a small Aegean island, where he continues to compose, travelling from there to present concerts and workshops around the world.

A Party Where Music Means Food!
Dear Friends of Upstream,
Upstream's 18th season is at an end and we are ready to unleash a new one. To delight you, we have chosen a meshing of improvised music and inspired food.
MUSIC: Daring musicians have agreed to mill about and await the call to improvise. As guests, you are the conductors of the night. At any time, you may turn to musicians and for a small donation request a solo, duo, trio etc. "Play for us the letter M, Play the colour orange…." prompting the spirit of improvisation.
FOOD: The Handicraft Hash House performs "Variations on a Theme." Local painter and epicure Ted White has designed canapés, soups and salads especially for the night. The Bayou, The Waldorf, and The Salt Peanut are his creations and are available for a small price. He may be enticed to improvise more on the spot.
SEASONING: A new season is beginning in July with A Love Upstream at the Atlantic Jazz Festival, and we want to tell you all about it. Paul Cram, our Artistic Director, has a special and fitting presentation prepared.
FUN RAISING: Like a true party, we are not charging at the door, but like a true fundraiser we are accepting donations. With solos etc. you can pledge an amount to be tallied at the end of the night. Remember, we are a charitable organization; we will issue a tax receipt for all donations $25 and over. See you there!

- Concerning music improvisation and other related matters
Collecting the thoughts and perceptions that have evolved from his past twenty-five years of music making and observation of the natural world, Malcolm Goldstein offers a very particular view of improvisation: "the musician as one centered in the process of discovery, unfolding moment to moment, that is realized in the gesture of enactment/sounding." Through articles, previously published in various periodicals, interspersed and embellished with excerpts from journals, interviews, letters, and music scores, the author touches on social, political, educational, aesthetic and economic considerations as he explores the "expression of the wholeness of our humanity."
